⚠️ Dangerous Dogs – Owner Responsibility and the Law ⚠️

Following an increasing number of calls to the police in relation to incidents involving dogs, the Nedge Safer Neighbourhood Team would like to remind dog owners of their legal responsibilities in keeping both their animals and members of the public safe.

Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, it is a criminal offence for a dog to be dangerously out of control in any place, including public areas, private property, and the owner’s own home or garden.

A dog is deemed dangerously out of control if it:

Injures a person, or

Causes someone to fear that they may be injured.

This also applies if a dog attacks another animal, or if a person fears injury while trying to stop an attack.

Owners are strongly advised to ensure that:

Dogs are kept under control at all times, whether on or off a lead.

Leads or muzzles are used where necessary, particularly if a dog displays aggressive or unpredictable behaviour.

Boundaries and gates are secure to prevent dogs escaping from gardens or properties.

Appropriate training or behavioural advice is sought if required.

Failure to comply with the law may result in prosecution, the seizure of the animal, and potential destruction orders.
